One Day Trip To Muthathi

We (Abins and Me) went to Muthathi,a beautiful place, 80kms away from Bangalore on 2005 February 20. We started the bike journey at 9.00 pm and reached there arond 12.00 pm. If we have avoided intermediate rest, we could have reached there by 11.0 am. We reached there by riding through the road which leads to Dindigal.

It took almost 15 kms jounrey from the highway to reach the place. The main attraction of the place is the beautiful calm river, away from the noisy urban area which flows through the valley of the mountains. Its a wonderful experience to watch the sunset and sunrise from the top of the mountains. But we reached there very late and time and other constraints didn't allow us to camp there over-night.

The river at Muthathi (Cavery)

The climate was too hot while we visited the place. So we spent a lot of time in the river. The trees surrounding the river were green, but the other trees which covered the mountains have shed their leaves and summer forest fire also made the surroundings too hot. It would be avesome if one could visit the place around October or November. At that time the climate will be cool and the surroundigs will be green.

There is a natural fishing camp near the place, but we were not able to enjoy fishing since, it required pre-booking We started our return journey at 4.00 pm and reached Bangalore around 6.30 pm. The one bad thing about the place is that there is no immediate help of anykind available nearby the place(Its a very remote place.) And there is no any means to have food.

Here are some photos from the location.

  2. Hi, interesting blog. I am planning to go to Muthatahi soon. I had a few queries about the place and I hope you would answer my queries at the erliest:

    1. How to reach Muthathi from kanakapura? Is there any sign board near satanur to take a turn towards Muthathi?

    2. Just two of ue are going. So is the place safe? Is there any place to park our bike? Can we take our bike into the forest?

    3. How far is the village from the river?

    4. Didnt you take a dip in the water?

I hope you would reply soon. would be really grateful.

    Thanks

  3. Hi Shetty, Thanks for visitng and leaving the comments.

Since you have not given any contact information such as email, I am replying to your questions as comments here.

    1. Yes there was sign boards, but many were in Kannada, since we don't speak or read Kannada, we reached the place by enquiring the right way at each junction. So if you know Kannada, I guess it won't be difficult for you to reach the place.

    2. When we went there we did not find any saftey issues. We did not go into the forest, but you will find lot of parking space along the bank of the river where lot of other vehicles will be parked. The one problem we faced was, monkeys try to tear open one of our sholder bags kept hanging on the bike, and the bag was damaged. If you are a couple, then it would be safe to go with a team of couples since it will have some issues which you will face in any tourist center.

    3. We rode another 10-15 kms to reach the village which I mentioned in my blog.

    4. Yes, we spent lot of time in the river, and that was when the moneky attacked the bag. Some locations may be deeper than you thing and the force of the water flow will be dangerous, so better select a location where most of the people are around.

Hope these information will be helpful for you.

  4. Guys,Going to Muthathi is all fine ! But take care, its also a dangerous place, and even though the water may look shallow there are spots, where it is more than 20 feet deep. I am writing this, because my buddy lost life there, and as of am writing, his body is yet to recovered, and this is not a lone incident, its common there. Be cautious if you want venture into water, take care of others also, These things can happen anywhere, but its a advice, from guy who also treks and travels, be careful at Muthathi, it can be treacherous, even though it may not look so. Never venture into water, without any safety gears.

  5. Dear Anumod,

Thanks for the precious information you shared in my blog. I feel sad for your brother's life.

In fact what you said is applicable to every one, for any tourist place. What I feel in my mind when I visit places is that, always respect the location in all ways, when ever you visit/trek some where.

    Please visit again.

  7. Hi Reshma,

Muthathi is not at all a safe place to enter into water.

MindTree COO & Gardener, Subroto Bagchi has recently sent a mail about the safety concerns of Muthathi, with a ppt attached about the death statitics that happened in Muthathi in the last few years. There are many dangerous spots in the river, which are known only to the local fisherman. The Cauvery fishing camp is a safe place, but it comes with a cost. If any of my readers want to go through the ppt please give your email id.

  9. Hi Deepu,

Good information on Muthathi. I would love to go there sometime. Would drive down over the coming weekends.

Looks like lot of you are interested in spending a lot of time in the water. Well there is a place that doesn't cost you much and is also safe to play in the waters. The place is called Talakadu.. most of you should be knowing it already!!

  13. I have seen many couples visiting Muthathi, while I went there. Personally speaking, I won;t prefer to go to Muthathi alone, with my family, until unless more family are there with us.

  15. Nishwanth,

I have emailed you my knowledge about Muthathi. It is not a safe place, especially for outsiders like us. Many hidden underwater currents are there which are known to the locale people only & many lives lost there on account of this.

By God's grace, we reached back safe.

  16. Hi,

This is Arun , the information i want to share is couple going alone is not safe to this place as i experienced when i travelled to this place with my gal friend last year.

i saw some 6 to 7 people waiting on the road side seems to me they were all cheaters , it was about 2 km to reach the river but i turned back without seeing teh place or atleast reaching the river also main thing is some strangers come here to drink and have fun so according to me going to this place with(couples) not safe most imprtant thing in the evening time the water raises slowly also there will be a drastic drift of current were you cannot control very dangerous so be carefull guys.

going with friend like 5 to 6 people to this place will be safe that too have to be very very carefull,,,,,,,,,,

  20. Hi Arun,

Thanks for the valuable information. I support your opinion. Infact none of the tourist places are safe for couples to visit alone. I prefer traveling with my wife, when some of my family friends are also with me.

  25. I too agree on that... Muthathi is too dangerous a place to get into water. I got mails, news and lot of info about causalities from there.
Never get into water if you don't know the place. Not only Muthathi.

  27. I agree, 2 days back I lost my best pal. He was there with a group 0f 25 other friends. He saw one of his friends drown. So went forward to help this guy out; unfortunately, he himself got caught in a whirlpool. We are yet to recover his body, and the search seem to never end.

PS: He was a very good swimmer

  30. Respect Nature, Respect Water!!! Do not enter such waters even after so many warnings...As someone mentioned above, do not forget that your beloved ones would be waiting for you back home..Take Care

    ReplyDelete
  31. The bad thing is that there are no good warnings shown there in Muthathi to people who visit the place - unaware of all these sad happenings.
